Indie Discovery LA Film Series screenings - August 2023 at Laemmle Glendale

NYC indie filmmaker Sujewa Ekanayake discovered the existence of Laemmle Theatres in LA area by seeing the documentary Only In Theaters by NYC based director/actor Raphael Sbarge at IFC Center in Manhattan. That was in early 2023 - in January. Then Ekanayake invented a plan to show real indie fiction feature films in LA - at Laemmle Theatres. 6 fiction features - including part 2 to Ekanayake's The Secret Society For Slow Romance (2022) - Cosmic Disco Detective Rene - were selected. 2 indie fiction features from NYC - Rene, and Bristol Fashion, 1 indie film from LA - Amir Motlagh's Three Worlds, and 3 foreign films (more info on those in early July, the films are currently setting up other distribution deals) were selected. The filmmakers, programmer Ekanayake, and Laemmle Theatres worked together to make the screening series happen.

The main goal of the screening series is to show diverse real indie films by new directors for at least 1 week - 7 screenings over 7 days - in LA area theaters. In part to support indie film theaters, including helping them discover new audiences. Filmmakers get all or a part of the ticket sales. A lot of promotional work will be done for the films.

The future for indie films in the US, and for arthouse theaters in the US, may include, in a major way, exclusive theatrical runs of diverse indie films, with large theatrical release windows. Indie Discovery LA is a project that experiments with possible approaches and works towards such a future. Indie Discovery LA may also be one of the largest single film screening event in 2023 in America - number of days wise. The event happens over 6 weeks - 1 in July, and in all of the weeks in August, presenting 6 films at 42 separate screenings. All films being shown are LA theatrical premieres, directors will attend the opening nights to meet audiences.

Indie Discovery LA is a new film screening series for experienced, self-distribution minded indie filmmakers who exhibit a strong personal vision with their body of work and make interesting/good real indie or non-Hollywood films. The films will be well made, will be interesting works of art and or will have entertaining aspects to them. Films will be shown at LA area art house theaters. A selective program that hopes to become an avenue for theaters, media, and the public to discover excellent, relatively unknown indie films and filmmakers - hidden gems. Screening series is organized/programmed/promoted by NYC indie filmmaker Sujewa Ekanayake, with assistance and advice from LA indie filmmakers and LA area experts on art and indie films. In 2023 we will experiment with different ways to organize and promote the screenings. In 2024 we should be able to show more films than we will in 2023. It’s an adventure for indie filmmakers and film fans!
